Path of Exile 2 Crafting: How It Differs from PoE 1

PoE 2 kept the orbs but changed the rules. Here's how crafting currency actually behaves in Path of Exile 2, what to target, and how Exiled Bench 2 automates the rolling.

If you're coming from Path of Exile 1, PoE 2 crafting looks familiar — same orb names, same rare/magic item tiers — but the rules underneath are different. Knowing those differences saves you a lot of wasted currency. Here's the short version, and how Exiled Bench 2 fits.

PoE 2 is evolving through early access, so exact currency behaviour can shift between patches. The principles below — additive crafting, targeting mods, native mod pools — are what stay true.

The currency behaves more additively

PoE 1 crafting leans on spam and reset: alteration-spam a magic item, scour it back to white, start over. PoE 2 leans the other way — currency mostly builds an item up step by step rather than rerolling it wholesale:

  • Orb of Transmutation / Augmentation — start a magic item and add a mod.
  • Regal Orb — upgrade a magic item to rare, carrying its mods and adding one.
  • Exalted Orb — add a new modifier to a rare (in PoE 2 these are your everyday "add a mod" currency, not a rare premium one).
  • Chaos Orb — remove a random mod and add a new one (a targeted change, not a full reroll).
  • Alchemy Orb — turn a white item straight into a rare.

The upshot: fewer "scour and pray" loops, more deliberate additions — which makes what you target matter even more.

Targeting still wins

Whatever the currency rules, the skill is the same as PoE 1: decide the exact mods you want and stop when they appear. Roll toward a mod and tier, watch for the danger/forbidden mods, and don't overspend chasing a roll you'll replace. (The mindset carries over from PoE 1 — see chaos spam vs alt-regal-exalt and the beginner currency guide.)

Waystones instead of maps

PoE 2's endgame runs on waystones (and region tablets) rather than PoE 1 maps. You roll them for reward mods the same way you'd roll a map — high rarity/quantity/pack size, none of the danger mods your build can't take. Full detail in the PoE 2 waystone & tablet guide.

A different mod pool means a different database

This is the big one for tooling: PoE 2's modifiers are not PoE 1's. Different mods, different tiers, different names. A PoE 1 crafting tool simply can't target PoE 2 items accurately — which is why Exiled Bench 2 ships its own PoE 2-native mod database, so when you pick a target it matches the game you're actually playing.

Automating it with Exiled Bench 2

The repetitive part — rolling currency and reading each result — is what EB2 automates:

  1. Pick your target mods (and forbidden mods) from the PoE 2 database.
  2. Choose your currency and press start.
  3. It rolls, reads the item, and stops the moment it matches — one item or a whole batch.

Tips

  • Respect the additive flow. With less "reset and reroll," plan the order you add mods rather than brute-forcing.
  • Roll waystones in bulk. Set thresholds once and batch a stash of waystones (see the waystone guide).
  • Use the right database. Targeting PoE 2 mods with PoE 1 assumptions is how currency gets wasted.

PoE 2 rewards deliberate crafting more than spam — set the target, let the tool do the clicking. See what Exiled Bench 2 covers, or get access.
