A Beginner's Guide to Path of Exile Crafting Currency

Path of Exile has no gold — its economy runs on currency orbs, and most of them are also crafting materials. If you're new, the sheer number of orbs is intimidating. This guide covers the ones you'll actually use to craft gear, what each does, and the sane order to learn them.

The core crafting orbs

• Orb of Transmutation — white → magic (adds 1–2 mods). The start of most crafts.
• Orb of Alteration — rerolls a magic item's mods. The workhorse of "fish for one specific mod."
• Orb of Augmentation — adds a mod to a magic item that only has one.
• Regal Orb — magic → rare, adding one mod. The bridge from the magic stage to a rare.
• Orb of Alchemy — white → rare (4–6 mods at once).
• Chaos Orb — rerolls all mods on a rare item. Also the main trade currency.
• Exalted Orb — adds a mod to a rare item. High value; used to finish strong rares.
• Orb of Scouring — strips an item back to white. Useful to reset and retry.
• Divine Orb — rerolls the numeric values of an item's existing mods (not the mods themselves).

Plus the specialist materials: Essences (guarantee a mod), Fossils + Resonators (bias the mod pool), and Harvest crafts (targeted reforges).

The mental model

Most crafts are a ladder from cheap-and-random to expensive-and-targeted:

1. Magic stage — cheap fishing with Alterations for a key mod (small pool, cheap rerolls).
2. Rare stage — Regal, then add/finish with Exalts, bench crafts, essences, or Harvest.

The single most useful habit: fish for the hard mod while it's cheap (magic stage), instead of praying it appears on a full rare reroll.

Where to start

• Pick a cheap base and practise the Alteration + Augmentation loop for one target mod.
• When you're comfortable, try essences (guaranteed mod) and fossils (biased pool) — more deterministic, less pure RNG.
• Learn when to chaos spam vs. build up a rare.

Don't waste currency

• Set a budget per item and stop when you hit it.
• Target the exact tier you want — keeping a low roll and starting over is how currency evaporates.
